Coming from a Christian background I favor and believe the Genesis creation story more then the Navajo. I was brought up to believe God created the mountains, the animals, the earth, human beings, and his power is limitless. But In the Navajo story it is a man who transformed items into mountains, animals, and hours. I don’t think a human being is capable of this even with the help of medicine. Many people have doubts about the story of Genesis but the thing is when your dealing with God anything is possible.

  1. I get what you mean Khircelle, but is it possible that the man in the Navajo story was in a way godlike, or another version of God? He did make impossible things happen and he controlled the entire world. Maybe this was just the way the Navajo’s viewed God.

  2. I agree with you in that with God anything is possible. I was brought up in the same type of religious house hold. But I feel that the Navajo story could be just as true as the one in Genesis. You have to admit that both stories have pretty outrageous ideas that can blow people away when hearing them. They are kind of similar in that respect. So the people that created the Navajo story could have been just trying to explain what they thought had happened.

  3. Some great responses here, all of you. Khircelle, our upbringing and beliefs certainly influence what we see as true. But do your beliefs not allow you to seek or see truth to be found in other creation myths?

  4. I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think that when the phrase "medicine man" is used, they actually mean medicine as we think of it today. Instead, the medicine men were shaman-like, and they helped to bridge the gap between the spirit world and the physical world. Just as, for you, anything is possible with God, the Navajo felt that almost anything was possible with the medicine men. It's all a matter of where you believe the power is from.
