Response To Question B

There are a couple ways to view this. Although that love and kindness would be a positive for the whole world if everyone and everything had this to influence there social and civil stability, but living in an imperfect world there is nothing really that can determine a social and civil society because everyone is different and have there own type of values that influence them. If everyone were to the adapt the love and kindness then the world wouldn't be as diverse as it is today. Within everyone having different influences no one can really tell what kind of civil or social stability is needed. There is good and evil within everyone, so saying that just a civil and social stability with just good or jen in this case. There wouldn't be any li to counterforce then jen. Although if everyone was caring and kind then everyone would most likely get along better than others. But that concept is unlikely because not everyone shares love and kindness towards everyone. Even though if everyone shared love and kindness then people will most likely come together, but seeing that it isn't possible it cannot be based on merely love and kindess towards everyone.

  1. While I agree that, in our society, it's almost impossible for everyone to love, I think that the question was more hypothetical. Let's just suppose love really was all you needed, would the world function?

  2. Hey, Kyle. You have somewhat missed the point of the question. I didn't ask if you thought a society based on love was achievable. What I asked was even more fundamental and hypothetical in nature: would a harmonious society necessarily follow from everyone treating everyone else lovingly? Would the result be civil and social stability or not?

The question of whether we can achieve it or not in our society is secondary to the question of whether or not it would produce the desired result. I want to know if a society governed solely by love and kindness is even worth trying to achieve. See where I'm coming from?

The answer isn’t as obvious as you seem to think. Visualize what a society would be like if everyone was taught from birth to be nice and to think about others before themselves. Would there be things like laws and schools (civil order)? Would it be “loving” to set a speed limit? Would there be things like families and dating (social order)? Remember, we’d need to love everybody equally—no favorites! Just because people are kind to you, would you necessarily have a happy life?

Also, don’t forget about the other part of my question: if love isn’t enough, then what else is needed? Was Confucius on to something when he spoke of li?
