courtly love is not a legitimate type of love as it offers now new concepts to our idea of love, but is more of a set of guidelines of how to love someone. whereas our modern idea of love involves pain and devotion and truthfulness, courtly love is more of a way to engage with someone that you are fond of, similar to a dating guide i suppose, but regardless of whether you follow the rules of courtly love or not, there is still a love between people and courtly love is just a way of expressing that love.

Does courtly love actually express your love? I thought of courtly love as a way of hiding your feelings of attraction to a person not a way to show your love. I do agree with your point that courtly love is a way to engage yourself with someone because they aren't the way you should treat someone if your truly in love.
ReplyDeleteNeed a little more information from you, Alex. Courtly love is all about a knight devoting himself to a lady (and vice versa)--the rules concern how to do this well. Don't we have the same rules today?
ReplyDeleteAs to Kevin's point about hiding your feelings in public, yes, that's one of the rules. You don't want the object of your devotion to be put in an awkward position.
